Original release

On behalf of the United States, I congratulate the people of Guatemala as you celebrate your Independence Day and another year of progress in our partnership.

Under President Bernardo Arévalo’s leadership, we achieved significant milestones together this year: a historic reciprocal trade agreement opening new markets for our farmers, manufacturers, and workers; a five-year global health Memorandum of Understanding through the Trump Administration’s America First Global Health Strategy; and expanded economic cooperation in critical infrastructure. Underpinning this progress is our steadfast security cooperation, disrupting cartels and fentanyl traffickers, and building one of our hemisphere’s most extensive migration partnerships.

This is just the beginning, as the United States and Guatemala continue building a safer and more prosperous future together.
